The value of old refrigerator
An orator asked people a question in one of his speeches, “A company is moving to a new site and it's a long way to travel, should they take away an old, yellowed air conditioner from the old site?” Many people shook their heads after hearing this and said, “The road cost of transporting the old air conditioner is quite a bit, so I would rather add money to the road cost to acquire a new one.” The orator smiled at that and did another interaction with the people on stage. He pulls out a $20 bill and then asks the audience on stage, “Which one of you wants this $20?” Almost all of the audience on stage raised their hands. But the orator said, “There is one thing I want to do before I give it to you.” With that, the orator crumpled the bill into a ball and asked, “Who wants more?” Still many hands went up on stage. The orator laughed and said to the people on the stage, “I think you've understood what I'm going to say today. You recognize the value of a bill even if it's dirty or wrinkled, but why do you look down on an old, yellowed refrigerator. It works fine. And not one of you has suggested what to do with it, is it the default to throw it away?” The audience was silent. Immediately afterward the orator said, “The company resold this air conditioner cheaply to someone who needed it, eventually earning 400 RMB to pay for the transportation of the other items.” The audience came to a realization: not only did this continue the value of the air conditioner, but it also saved the company money, the best of both worlds.
